The vineyard is owned by Graeme and Gillian Crosbie, who have connections to the area as holiday locals, over many decades.
Domain Road Vineyard is on the upper Bannockburn terraces above the Kawarau River with their grapes on a single estate block of 6.5 hectares.
Pinot Noir is the focus, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, which are grown and made with a dedication to excellence wedded to a traditional hands-on approach.
Their “Overall Philosophy is that they believe their single vineyard site is the strongest element in the distinctiveness of their wines. Dedicated, detailed, hands-on care of the vines over each season and through the years allow the harvest of outstanding grapes.
The winemaker’s role is to reflect the distinct character of the fruit from the vineyard, through traditional, low intervention practices in the winery.
When land in Domain Road became available to purchase, discussions with local winemakers and viticulturists provided evidence that the Domain Road location had exciting potential for great grapes and fine wines.
Transforming the Domain Road site from an apricot orchard into a vineyard began in 2002, with the first planting of Pinot Noir grapes completed in 2003. Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling varieties were planted successively in 2004 and 2005.
Holidays in Bannockburn became working holidays as the young vines were planted, became established, and were nurtured through their first productive season, with the first small harvest producing Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Rosé in the exceptional 2006 vintage.
The vineyard now covers most of the small valley with a section of the vineyard land that has been mined for gold, and the Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling grapes are thriving here. The Pinot Noir has been planted on an area that has yet to be mined, and may still contain gold!
The challenging terroir expresses itself in wines of structure, elegance and pure, intense flavours.
Pinot Noir 2008 has aromas of sweet spiced oak and forest floor aspects. It is nicely balanced with firm yet elegant spicy tannins that are well rounded out by the lovely dark cherry fruit and earthy/mushroom notes that helped this Pinot pick up Gold at the London International Wine Challenge this year.
Sauvignon Blanc 2009 has a zesty, fresh, tangy nose showing a touch of blackberry leaf, sweet peapod, lime zest and gooseberry. It is elegant and smooth with some structure from subtle phenolics that are well supported by the flavoursome peapod and gooseberry notes that has a passing resemblance to a French style.
