Felton Road and Pyramid Estate Wine Tasting and Dinner

This event went off beautifully with some fantastic wines enjoyed on the night and supported by the guidance of the respective winemakers of each estate.

For me the Pyramid Valley wines overall were the pick of the night although the Felton Road Chardonnay and certainly the 1999 Block 3 Pinot Noir were the outstanding wines of the Felton Road Range available on the night, with a total of 13 wines tasted overall.

The dinner was fantastic and up to the usual high standard we have come to expect from the Q Restaurant and staff at the Westin Hotel.

Seared Scallops with two distinctly different Rieslings, Venison – medium rare with the two Calvert Pinot Noirs made by each estate, 5 spice Duck with mushroom paired with Felton 1999 Block 3 Pinot Noir and Pyramid Earth Smoke Pinot Noir, both Superb!

Dessert of Lemon Mousse and White Chocolate went with Felton Block 1 Riesling and finally the Pyramid Late Harvest Semillon was had with baked blue cheese custard.

For those of you who were fortunately able to attend, we are taking orders for the Pyramid Estate wines that were tasted on the night, and I will look to put away some of that outstanding Earth Smoke Pinot for myself. Contact me for prices and details.

News Item - Militants destroy GMO research vines

Militants opposed to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have destroyed a plantation of GM vines at a leading French research centre in Alsace.

Some 60 activists broke into the compound, near Colmar in eastern France, at dawn on Sunday.

The centre was studying potential solutions to the Grapevine Fanleaf virus (GFLV).

'These idiots have destroyed seven years of work which has been recognised in the United States, in Britain, in Germany and in Switzerland,' said Jean Masson, head of the centre belonging to the French National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA).

There is no known cure for GFLV, which is borne by nematode earth worms and is present in almost all the world's winemaking regions.

It can reduce yields by 50% before killing the vines and rendering vineyard soil unviable for future plantations.
